Dear HMRC, If I were to buy a property which briefly becomes my sole and main resident prior to moving abroad, and I decide to put a new bathroom and a kitchen into the house then rent it out 4–6 months later, would I still be able to claim tax relief on these expenses even though they may fall in a previous tax year. Thank you

Please refer to Use of trading income rules and splitting receipts and expenses between years: examples for splitting expenses and receipts between years.  
Expenses for work done is deductible in that tax year.
