Hello, I have been trying to figure out how to file a VAT return. I have received a few notices saying I have to. I have tried going through my accounting sofware, Intuit Quickbooks, but it appears as if I need the UK version to be able to file VAT returns and to get the bridging software. I cannot figure out how to register for MTD as well. I am having a hard time figuring out how to do this or if there is any other way besides through the accounting software to file a return from the US. I am a very very small business that does maybe $1000 in orders to the UK each year, but I may have to stop shipping to the UK if I cant figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi, I followed the HMRC link for finding software compatible with MTD. However, the US version of Quickbooks does not connect with HRMC like the UK version. The steps in Quickbooks documentation cannot be followed (https://quickbooks.intuit.com/uk/making-tax-digital/registering-for-mtd-vat/). I am representing a US business and we received late notices on VAT owed. Any additional guidance would be appreciated.

Hi,
HMRC don't have a list of compatible software which will assist with your issues.
Please see guidance at Who should register for VAT (VAT Notice 700/1) Section 9
We would suggest calling VAT: general enquiries for further advice.
Alternatively you could contact the compatible software providers listed here: Find software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax to see if any can assist.
Thank you
