Hi Anthony,
To check your State Pension entitlement, may I ask that you apply for a State Pension Forecast which will detail your current and future entitlement.
You may obtain this via:  Check your State Pension forecast
Thank you.

Is it correct that if child benefit was not claimed for full tax year HRP is not payable? Year 81/82 tax year we claimed Child benefit from April 19th so not a full year. Year currently is shown as incomplete for NI credits

Hi Neil,
I can confirm that Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) was only awarded for claims to Child Benefit for a full tax year (6 April to 5 April).
So if you were not in receipt of Child Benefit for the full tax year then the HRP would not have been awarded.
Thank you.

Hi, This is a question for HMRC admin. I'm writing on behalf of my mother who has recently attempted to fill out the CF411 form online. My father claimed child benefit for 4 years from 1982 to 1986 whilst he was working and she was caring for me for me full time. Sadly he is now deceased and she believed she would be able to transfer the HRP for those years from him. When she attempted to fill the form online, it asked if she had reached pension age before 2008. As she reached pension age in 2007 she was then unable to proceed with the form. I'm now confused as in a reply to another post 22 days ago, HMRC admin 8 states: 'Reaching state pension age in 2006 does not prevent your wife from applying for a transfer of HRP.' Could one of the HMRC admins please clarify if this is the case and it is possible for my Mum to get HRP transferred even though she reached pensionable age before 2008? Thanks.

Hi,
To be eligible to transfer HRP from their spouse/partner, the applicant must reach state pension age on or after 6/4/2008, so in this case if the person making the application was SPA in 2007 then any request for a transfer would be rejected.
Thank you.

I received a letter stating that I was entitled to HRP from 1978 - 1996 and this has been recorded on my National Insurance. Does this mean that I am owed money? Also, if so, how long after this letter should I expect to receive it? Thanks

Hi Labrador9,
If you have been awarded HRP to your national insurance account, it counts towards the qualifying years to the state pension.
You can check if there is a revised pension award and if it has increased the amount on the Personal tax account: sign in or set up
Or you can contact the Department for work and Pensions:

1) My wife has recieved a letter from HMRC saying she is eligible for HRP as she has a few years in her NI record between 1994 and 2004 that are not full . 2) She has checked the portal records and that is correct. 3 ) The Child benefit payment for our son at the time was being credited to our joint bank account but in my name. I was also paying in my NI contributions from employment during these years 4) The question is if I transfer these HRP credits to my wife ( lets assume they are for 9 years ) will this reduce my qualifying years from my.state pension claim ?

Hi,
If you contact the department for work and pensions, they will be able to advise you on the HRP period to see if it affects your qualifying tax years to a full state pension.
Your wife can send form CF411 into HMRC to request the transfer of HRP tax years and we will advise you if the transfer can be made.

My mum has been awarded home protection and has phoned the Dwp. They said they are dealing with it. She got the letter in February this year. How long are they taking for payment’s? Thanks

Hi tory Delve,
Thank you for your query
HMRC will notify DWP of any changes to your National Insurance record. DWP will review your mothers current State Pension and notify your mother of any arrears or changes to entitlement if applicable. DWP have a specialist team who are reviewing these National Insurance Records, this team will work on reviews in the date order they have been received from HMRC.  Unfortunately, we are unable to give you a timescale of when your mothers State pension payment will change.
Thank you.

Received letter from HMRC dated 21st August 2023 to say that I was entitled to HRP for years 1978 to 1985 and this had been recorded on my records. This is still not showing on my account. Contacted Pension Centre some weeks ago to say that I had not heard anything and was told that the records had been updated but could not offer any other help as to why I had had no reply or why records were not correct. Is there anything I should have done after receiving letter C1CW39 as information was not very clear.

Hi, my HRP was completed July this year, my son was born July 1975, Just wanted to know when I will receive an answer for this, and how, is it by post, or message left on the message page. They wanted details of his father, but he walked out when he was 3yrs old, never a backward glance or help with finance, but nowhere to put this on application.

Hi Kathleen Hunt,
You may not be seeing any HRP on your account for the tax years 1978-1985 as  if you reached State Pension Age (SPA) before 6 April 2010, you would not have been awarded any credits that would cover up gaps on your account.
HRP works by reducing the number of qualifying years you need for the full basic State Pension up to a maximum of 22 years
To get the full basic State Pension a woman normally needed 39 qualifying years and a man 44. For example, if  somebody had 15 years of HRP, it would reduce the number of qualifying years needed from 39 to 24
National Insurance (NI) credits awarded as HRP were not converted into credits for customers reaching SPA before 6 April 2010.
If you reached State Pension age after 6 April 2010, please contact us via telephone or webchat.
