Hi, At my last workplace I provided them with the wrong national insurance number and provided my mother’s instead. I have since amended this. The national insurance has been corrected now. However, 2-3 months ago, HMRC raised a debt with LCS against my mum because due to accidentally using her national insurance number, my earnings from the workplace were marked against her name, affecting her tax credits this HMRC wanting the money back. I paid this debt off for my mum. However, now that i have provided evidence to HMRC and the right insurance number has been amended, what can I do to get this money back. I have contacted HMRC by telephone daily, with waiting over an hour to talk to someone and have been transferred. Will I receive this money back?

Hi Aysha Nasir,
If you have not done so already, I would advise to check your own personal tax account first to confirm that your employment is now on record for the period in question.
You can sign up to a personal tax account through this link - Personal tax account: sign in or set up
Once you have confirmation your own account is up to date consider getting your mother to also check her own information for the tax years involved.
As the debt you paid was for your mothers account it would be better if you both called together.
Call the tax credits helpline, your mother will be the primary account holder for her own security.
As essentially your mother has now overpaid tax credits based on the information you have provided, please call the tax credits line for advice and the way forward.
