I just moved to UK and paid for my first year's NI. Per information on my own account page, I will not able to get full pension (since I wont be able to pay enough years). As the page shows I have no gap year, may I know any way to pay for the missing years as if I would like to get full pension when I being retired in future?

Hi yipchunyu,

I am afraid you cannot pay NICs for years prior to your arrival in the UK.
If there is a shortfall for the tax year during which you arrived, you can make a payment for this year, but not for any earlier ones.

Thank you.

Thanks a lot. So, seems the way to increase the pension for my case may be delay the start date. Anyway, it's too far away. Let me handle it when I come close to retirement age then.

Im uk tax resident. I have no job in uk. My income is from interest + investment + part time duty in overseas (not under employment by uk bodies). whiich pension class should I considered if I want top up my pension gap in coming 10 years in order to meet the minimum pension requitrement? ( I am approach 50s.) Class 2 is self employment but actually I m not this case. Class 3 is voluntary contribution to fill gap Should it be more appropriate to label myself as class 3? Thanks

Hi samwai,
If you are a UK tax resident you need to be completing self-assessment if your income is at a certain level, unless you are already doing this.
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
Tax on foreign income
You can call the NI helpline to discuss national insurance, they can advise you regarding class 3 voluntary contributions.
With a Personal tax account you can use the webchat services or call:

Overseas - +44 191 203 7010
Open - Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm - Closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Thank you.
