Hi, I've received a payment from HMRC for £259 with no letter and explanation as to why. I've called your helpline and nobody I have spoken to has a clue either so hoping someone here might know. The payment is for £259 and is in my bank account under the description "class 1 nic from hmrc dir tax pyts"

Hi

Without any customer info we are unable to see exactly what the refund/payment is in relation to.
The notification “direct tax payments” mean it could be related to PAYE and not National Insurance.
The only way to check for sure is to call the Income Tax: general enquiries to discuss and they will refer to NI if applicable.

Thank you.

Christopher - did you find out? I have had a payment the same - HMRC DIR TAX PYTS CLASS 1 NIC - a smaller amount to yours, but I'm not sure if I have the energy to spend 30+ mins on the phone and then try to explain. Like you, no notifications in my tax account, no letters, no emails. Your post is the only sensible thing that Google returns when searching those payer details. Thanks!

In case this helps anyone in the future: I too was Googling this payment because I didn't have a clue what that was and the search led me here. A few days later, it just occurred to me I think I know what that is. A few months ago I received a letter from HMRC saying because I have more than one job and I pay NI on all of them, I may have paid more than I should in NI contribution and asked me to fill in a form with some details and return it back, which I did. I completely forgot about it as I never received any follow up correspondence and I assumed I wasn't entitled any refund, and I just remembered this now, and it's the only thing I can think of at least in my case. Hope that helps.

Hi,

Where a person undertakes multiple employments, we issue a letter that a potential national insurance refund may be due. If you have received the letter CA4361 you can do one of the following to enquire if you are due a refund: Thank you.
