I have been living in Spain for many years and have been accepted by HMRC to pay voluntary NICs for the previous tax years available to me. However, I'm a little unsure whether I qualify for the Class 2 or Class 3 rates. One of the stipulations for Class 2 is that you are currently working abroad. I am employed, though only part time ( I am a language teacher in a private academy), and was wondering if this still allows me to pay Class 2 contributions to top up the pension for which I'm eligible next year. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi MarkR,
If you previously completed our CF83 application form to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions whilst overseas you may have arranged for either an annual request for payment to be sent to you or set up a direct debit.
If you did not do this then may I ask that you complete and return one and our International Team will be able to update your National Insurance account and send you a letter to quote any shortfalls of voluntary contributions.
You should read leaflet NI38 ‘Social Security Abroad’ before completing the CF83 application form.
Here are the links to NI38 and CF83
Thank you.
