I managed to get my reference number for voluntary NI contributions from HMRC. At the time I was told it would be valid until the end of July 2023 (the first deadline extension date.) With the deadline now having been extended until 2025 will my existing number still be valid until then? Thank you.

Hi Tracey Brennan,

The information you currently have to make a Voluntary National Insurance (NI) payment up to 31/7/23 expires after that date.
If you wish to make a Voluntary NI payment from 1/8/23 you will need to contact the National Insurance Helpline on 03002003500 open 8am to 6pm,
they will advise you of the amount to pay for the year required and provide a new 18-digit reference number.

Thank you

That's a pity (for the beleaguered Future Pensions and HMRC helpline staff as much as for me) but very useful to know. Thank you.

Hi HMRC Admin 20 Surely as the 2022/23 prices are being held until April 2025 it shouldn't be necessary to call again as the reference will still be valid?

Hi jictink,

I can confirm that the rates for paying Voluntary Class 2 will stay at the same rate to 05/04/2025.
If you have already received the information on how to pay a tax year this information can be used up to the above date.

Thank you

Hi HMRC Admin 20, Could you just clarify, please: does your reply to jictink only apply to people making Voluntary Class 2 contributions, meaning that I (as per your response to my original question) will still have to get another reference number, even though my selected top-up years and payment amounts would be the same after the end of July 23? I'm not making Class 2 contributions, it's just a post-retirement pension top up. Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Many thanks for your help.

Hi Tracey Brennan,
To confirm, if the years in question are historic years where the rates are being held then any payment information and references would still be valid until April 2025.
Thank you.
