Hi, I am asking on behalf of my family member. My mom is about to become 70 years old and was just came to live in uk last year. She was not employed nor self-employed nor taking any benefits. However, in her personal tax account, the system shows she has 1 year of full contributions on national insurance. In my understanding, I think the record is not correct or maybe something went wrong. Could you please advise if this is really a mistake? Do I need to call you to check about her record? Thanks for your attention.

Hi,

It is likely to be an error if your mum has never lived or worked in the UK and is over State pension age.

One full year of National insurance on her record will have no impact on her National insurance record as she is over state pension age and therefore no liable for national insurance or credits.

Thank you.

Thanks for answering. Do I necessarily need to call hmrc to correct the record?

Hi STCY,
You don’t have to call HMRC. However, without checking your Mums National Insurance records I am unable to confirm if the National Insurance contributions shown are correct or not.
For your own (or your Mums) clarification you can contact HMRC by phone or post. Please see contact details below:
National Insurance contributions and Employers Office
PT Operations North East England
HM Revenue and Customs

Telephone – 0300 200 3500 (Lines are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm)
Thank you.
