I ( Sole Trader) have registered as an employer using the standalone form and am waiting for my details. When it comes to PAYE, I’ve read that I have to set up a separate Gov.uk account but when I get my employer reference numbers they will be under my personal/ self assessment ID so which do I use when registering for PAYE?

Hi
To register as an employer, you need to enrol for the Online Services as an 'Organisation'. This will allow you access to the business tax account, which includes PAYE for Employers. You will have a separate user ID & password to your personal tax account. Once you have received your PAYE references, you will add these to your Business Tax Account which will generate an activation code to be issued to your business address. Once you have activated the online account, you will be able to use your new user ID & password to send your payroll submissions via your payroll software. If you need any assistance with the online account, please contact the Online Services Helpdesk on 0300 200 3600. If you have not already registered for the Online Services as an 'Organisation' you can do so here: HMRC online services: sign in or set up an account

I registered via the standalone form for Sole traders because that’s what it said to do. I couldn’t register as an organisation because it wouldn’t let me past the page that asks if you are a partner or a director as I am not. Hence my confusion. Once I get my Employers reference details through the post from the sole trader form, CAN I use those details in my personal/ business tax account or not?

Hi Helen Vasey,
If you are employing staff and have registed for a PAYE scheme, you shoud use the Employer references to send payroll returns and you should register for PAYE online services.
If you wish to discuss further, please call the Employer Helpline on 0300 200 3200.
Thank you.
