I'm leaving UK in May this year probably not coming back in anytime. My last working day is confirmed to be 6th May 2024. For the tax year 2024/2025, can I tell HMRC to change my tax code because my annual income in 2024/2025 would not exceed the person allowance? And how do I receive the payment from HMRC. I think HMRC usually sends cheque for refund. Do they also do bank transfer?

Hi Siu Tung Lam,
If you are leaving the UK then you would complete a form P85 to claim any repayment due.
On the form you can request repayment into a UK bank account.
You can complete the form online at:
Get your Income Tax right if you're leaving the UK (P85)
Thank you.

Hi, I was in the UK from March 2021 to June 2024. I started working from 2021 but did not pay any taxes as it was part time. I started working full time from around March 2022 and started paying taxes thereafter. When I left the UK in June 2024, I applied for a tax return using the P85 form. However, I only got a tax return for the tax year 2024-2025 (i.e. May-June 2024). Will I not get a tax return for the previous years? If yes, do I need to fill out the P85 again or do I need to contact someone for this?

Hi Srai92,
June 2024 falls in the tax year 2024 to 2025.
You should check whether a Self Sssessment tax return is still required for 2024 to 2025.
You can do this here:
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
Please contact the our Self Assesment helpline:
Self Assessment: general enquiries
If you do not intend to return to the UK and a tax return is not required, my colleagues should be able to deal with your repayment claim.
Thank you.

Thank you. However, I wanted to know if I will be getting any tex returns for the years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. I have already received my tax return for the year 2024-2025. Please can you let me know if I need to fill any other forms to get my tax returns for the years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024.

Hi,

Based on the information provided in your original question, you would not have to complete Self Assessment tax returns for the years 2022 to 2023 and 2023 to 2024. However, you may wish to check the position by using our Self Assessment Criteria tool here:

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

Thank you.

Hi, I left my UK job 01 April 2024, and left the UK in July 2024, and started a full time job overseas in India. Likely not coming back. I already updated the address in the HMRC account. Each year I've been submitting self assessment, due to overseas rental income. Now that I left the UK, do I need to submit any form like P85 or 109 ? Or inform the HMRC in any additional way ? Secondly, do I need to submit the self assessment form next year, for the last time? I may fit the criteria for UK tax residency for the current year, with a split year treatment.

Hi,

When you complete your 24/25 tax return next April, include the form SA109, and send your return by post. You can read more here:

Hi,
If your UK employer deducted your tax through your wage, complete the form P85, which you can find here:
Tax if you leave the UK to live abroad
You should not need a UK passport to complete this form.
Thank you.

Hi Muss,
No, the tax deducted each year is not refundable whilst you are living and workimg here.
You may claim for the current year if you leave part way through the year and any refund will depend on your level of income received.
Thank you.
