I am a British expat living in Canada, and I have been dealing with HMRC about a tax refund I am owed. I asked if they could pay the refund directly into my UK-based WISE account, They said they could do that for a UK resident, but they will not do that for a Canadian resident. HMRC offered the following two options: 1. HMRC will make the refund cheque payable to any UK resident of my choice (i.e. a nominee). The nominee would then deposit the cheque and then transfer the funds to my WISE account because WISE does not accept cheques. 2. HMRC will make the refund cheque payable to me, and send it to Canada. About two weeks later when the cheque arrives, I would take it to my Canadian bank, which would hold it for 30 days before the funds are made available. Moreover, the exchange rate would leave me with $429 less than if WISE did the conversion (option 1 above) Why can HMRC not EFT the refund to a Canadian resident's UK-based WISE account electronically to avoid these unnecessary delays?

Hi,
I am sorry but at present those are the options available for the repayment to be issued.
Thank you.
