Hi there, I have a question about Self Assessment. Would you help me out please? I moved to the United Kingdom from Hong Kong last year. I am now an UK resident. I don't have a job in United Kingdom and I receive monthly pension from Hong Kong Government. Under the Article 17 of Double Taxation Treaty between UK and HK, the pension from Hong Kong is only taxable in Hong Kong. Do I need to file the Self Assessment Tax Return? Thank you very much

Hi

Under Article 17 of the tax treaty with Hong Kong, this income is not taxable in the UK and doesnt need to be declared.

Thank you

I was a retired civil servant of Hong Kong government and I got the monthly pension from Hong Kong government. I moved to UK two years ago and I am not working at UK. I don't have any income except the Hong Kong pension. However, I applied my UK tax account and made self assessment return in past two years, I would like to ask whether I can request to stop the self assessment for the coming year. What action I should take for making the request. Thank you.

Hi ,

Your Hong Kong government civil service pension is only taxable in Hong Kong.

It should not be included in a self assessment tax return.

You will need to review the guidance at :

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

If you can confirm that you do not need to complete a tax return, then please contact our self assesment helpline on 0300 200 3310

or contact our webchat facility at :

 Contact HMRC   .

and advise them you have checked the self assessment criteria tool and you do not meet self assessment criteria.

My colleagues can arrange to withdraw any future tax returns .

Thank you .
