Hello, I have a problem with cashing a cheque from tax year 2019/2020. It is addressed to my oversee address and due to Brexit both UK accounts were closed. What is the way to cash that check without a bank account.

Hi,

You would need to write to us to nominate a person to receive a replacement who could cash a cheque, or make enquiries in your country as to how you can cash it.

Income Tax: general enquiries

Thank you.

Hi Hasan Hasan,
I am sorry that the cheque was reissued to your wife if she'd supplied us with your details as her nominee.
If your wife can contact us by webchat or phone via Income Tax: general enquiries we can reissue the cheque with the correct information.
Thank you.

Hello, i briefly worked in the UK last yr (2023) and today I received a cheque from HMRC for my income tax repayment. I am currently overseas and do not have plans of going back to the UK. I am not a UK resident. I have no UK bank account or friends to nominate on my behalf. Is there a possibility for HMRC to arrange for the funds to be directly transferred to my Philippine bank account?

Hi Paulo,
Unfortunately, HMRC cannot convert your repayment into another currency, or  transfer it abroad, as doing so may incur fees.
You could open a new UK bank or UK building society account that will accept the cheque, or we can send a replacement cheque to a nominee you appoint - we can send a replacement cheque to this nominee if they have a UK bank account.
If you live overseas, you can find more information here:

Thank you.
