My wife and I have encashed an onshore investment bond and have been sent a CGC dated 30/11/2023. We are both of pensionable age. I know we must inform HMRC of this gain and as it exceeds the £10000 threshold we each should register for self assessment to do this. Despite ‘searching’ we remain ‘at a loss’ as to precisely what to do - regarding timescale. What I’d like to know is when should we do this and what might any relevant deadline be?

Hi Akaay72,
As it is over the £10,000 threshold, you will now need to register for Self Assessment to declare this income.
Gains on UK life insurance policies (Self Assessment helpsheet HS320)
Thank you.

Thank you HMRC Admin 25 for your response. Am I correct in thinking - as the gain was made on November 30th. 2023 - that we would register and complete SA in the new tax year after 6/4/24 - completing the online forms once we have the details of our earnings and other savings interest for the last tax year?

Hi Akaay72

Yes that is correct.

Thank you
