I've had my application for voluntary class 2 contributions from overseas accepted. I've missed a lot of years and the shortfall is quite large. Am I able to pay in part / select the years I make up the shortfall? Some of the years are class 3 and considerably higher - does not paying these years have a greater negative impact on future state pension? Many thanks

Hi David,
You do not need to pay for all of the years quoted on your record, even though it may be beneficial, you can select specific years.
To discuss any impact the payments have on your state pension, please call the Future Pension Centre on +44 (0)191 218 3600.
Before making any voluntary payments, we recommend speaking to the Future Pension Centre for advice on whether the years you are paying for will boost your pension entitlement.
Thank you.

Dear HMRC, I have received confirmation that I can pay Class 2 NIC's by annual payment and I need to pay before 5th April 2025. I currently work overseas and have been unable, due to the extraordinary wait times, contact HMRC by phone. I would like to clarify two points- 1. Am I obliged to pay the full amount in one lump-sum, or can I pay in, say, three equal payments? 2. May I simply transfer the funds from my UK account via CHAPS or Bacs, using the NI number-IC-surname-initial code as the reference? Please don't give me a UK telephone number to call. That doesn't work. Many thanks

Hi John,
I can confirm that you may use your UK bank account to transfer your payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions to us and use the 18 Digit Reference Number as you mentioned.
You may pay the full amount in one go if you wish or you may break it down into tax years.
We would ask that you pay at least one full tax year or multiples of tax years at a time.
Once you have made your payment please allow about 8 weeks for it to be shown on your Personal Tax Account.
Thank you.
