Hi, I would like to ask if NI number is a must for opening a cash ISA account. I have parents who are already over retirement age and not eligible to apply for a NI number by HMRC due to their currrent retirement age. When they try to apply for a cash ISA account in which NI number is required, and so they are not allowed to apply for this kind of ISA account due to the reason "no NI number". But they have opened the current and saving accounts at local bank. From this above experience, I wonder if the retired adult with No NI number is deprived of this tax benefit from HMRC / UK Government. Please advise / confirm. Thank you.

Hi,

Every applications for any type of ISA, must contain:
  • Full name
  • Permanent residential address, including postcode
  • National insurance number, which must be provided for all ISA types
  • Date of birth
  • The applicant must be a UK resident in the year they make their application. They will need to prove their residency status.
You can see guidance here:

Information you need from investors when they apply for an ISA

Thank you.

Hi HMRC Admin 19, this seems incorrect as per the guidance at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-open-an-isa-as-an-isa-manager#:~:text=National%20Insurance%20number,cash%20ISAs it is possible for someone to not have an NI number. Furthermore, when applying for an NI number at https://www.apply-national-insurance-number.service.gov.uk/apply/may-not-need-nin there is an explicit message that says one does not need an NI to open an ISA and that organisations should have an alternative means to support such people.
