My salary varies between below £50k and above £60k. As such we claim child benefit for our 2 children and I have repaid over payments via the following year's tax code in previous years. This year my income is £58,500 so I need to pay back 85% of the CB (about £1650). I have selected the option on the self assessment to delay repayment as it is below £3000, but when I am on the last page it says that I will need to repay by the 31st of January rather than being repaid via PAYE. I think that the same thing happened last year, but the amount owed was only £150 so I just paid it. Have I missed something? Am I safe to submit or will I be stung with a lump sum demand (that I can't afford)?

Hi Craig Chambers,

The calculation will show the balance due by the 31 January 2024 but if the balance is below £3000 and you have opted to collect in your 2024/25 tax code this will then show on your statement.

Thank you.
