Hi, I started freelance in May 2024 (as a side job along with my other main job), which means it belongs to the tax year 2024-2025. When I was about to fill out the SA form online, it still said "return 2023-2024" and "In the tax year 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024:". I did not do any freelance during the 2023-2024 tax year so I'm not sure how to proceed if the questions are for this tax year because it's irrelevant. There's a section asking me to register if I'm self-employed but I wasn't self-employed during the 2023-2024 period. Can you please clarify this for me on how to proceed? Thank you

Hi,
If your freelance work did not start until May 2024 then that will be the current 2024 to 2025 tax year.
If you have received a notice to file a 2023 to 2024 Self Assessment tax return and you do not think you need to file then you can check if you meet criteria here:
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
If you do not meet the criteria then you can submit an online submission to cancel the 2023 to 2024 tax return. You can also contact our Self Assessment team to review this. Self Assessment: general enquiries
Thank you.
