Hi, I’m trying to figure out if and how I record income from monthly private pension payments on my self assessment tax return when the payments have already been taxed at source. The form asks if I am in receipt of income from a private pension but does not ask how much I receive or if I’ve already paid the tax. I’m confused.

Hi ,

On a paper SA100, which you can order from the SA orderline on 0300 200 3610, there is box  11 and 12 on page TR3, that allows you to declare pension received and tax paid .

If you are paying into a pension scheme and want to claim higher rate tax relief, you would declare the gross pension payment in box 1 of page TR4 .

In the online tax return, you would tailor your return to inclue pensions and pension tax relief .

Thank you .

Hi, thank you for your help, it is very much appreciated however, I have to ask you to excuse my lack of understanding and ask for further clarification on the following: Are you saying that I include payments I have received from my pension, to my trading income for my overall income total? And, there is nowhere on the self assessment for me to record the tax I’ve already paid on the pension payments I received. Surely I would be paying tax twice on the pension payments given that they’ve already been taxed at source. I’m so confused.🫤

Hi ,

Yes the pension payments would be included in your overall income.

If you receive pension paymens then on the Self Assessment tax return on page TR3 box 11 you would declare the payments received

and box 12 the tax paid at source .

Thank you .
