Hi there, I'm registered as a Sole Trader (not VAT) and have decided to relocate and leave the UK. I still need to submit my Self Assessment for the year 2023/2024 and also 2024/2025. I stopped working at the beginning of August and I'm planning to open a business in Italy within the next couple of months. Can I close the business now and inform HMRC before submitting both Self Assessments? Thank you for your time! Devid

Hi devids1,
You can inform us that your ceasing being Self Employed as a sole trader here:
Stop being self-employed
You can file your 23/24 return immediately, while you can send us your 24/25 return from the 6th of April 2025.
If you have left the country when you file your 24/25 return, please send a paper copy, and include a SA109.

Thank you.

Hello again, I've tried quite a few times to inform you that I've ceased being self-employed through the link above, but my request keeps getting rejected, not sure if that's because I've updated my address, but the reason I've been given seems to be that my address doesn't match your records. I then spoke to one of your colleagues on the phone who said that he didn't have the option to do it for me as my last year self-assessment was still due. I've now done last year self-assessment and it is marked as filed, but I'm still not able to inform you that I've ceased being self-employed. I've relocated to Italy already, so I really need to sort this out as soon as possible. What's the right procedure now please? Thank you!
