Hello, My gross income before tax went over 50K last year in Jan 2023. For the tax period 2022-2023 this increase is only for 3 months. My P60 shows income below 50 in the box Total for the year. And same figure "in this employment". Do I still register for self assessment for high income Child Benefit charge pay back? This year the threshold is going up to 60K earning from April 2024. So what happens for earnings from Jan2024 to 6th April 2024, when the threshold is 50K? Thank you, B.

I’m in a similar situation also looking for an answer. My income is around £53k in total for the tax year 2023-4, but when I deduct pension contributions it’s just under £50k, so do I need to complete a self-assessment? On your question about income between Jan to April 2024 - this counts as the tax year 2023-2024 so will come under the rules in place for the 2023-2024 tax year. Tax years run from 6 April to 5 April. Your P60 will show the figures for the tax year (6 April to 5 April), not the calendar year (1 January to 31 December).

Hi B Fox,
If for 2022/23 your income was below £50K for the tax year then you will not need to register for Self Assessment due to the Higher Income Child Benefit Charge, HICBC.
If you are above the £50K threshold for 2023/24 then you will need to register for the current tax year.
Thank you.

Hi,
If the pension contributions are taken from your gross income before tax is calculated then you woud not deduct them again from your income total as relief already been given.
If from your net income and when deducted takes you below £50K then you would not need to complete a Self Assessment for the Higher Rate Child Benefit Charge, HICBC.
Thank you.
