I paid a relatively large amount for my first payment on account for 22-23 in January. I did my online self assessment last week, and as I have earned a fair bit less than for 21-22, the remainder owed for that year is now a fairly small amount. However, it seems my paper bill was generated just before I filed my return, so has now arrived this week, asking for another large payment on account. This contradicts my online statement which says I owe a much smaller amount as that takes into account my actual tax return, rather than an estimate based on the previous year. Am I OK to disregard the paper letter and just pay what it says is owed when I log in online? Otherwise I have to pay a large amount, then wait for most of that to be refunded. I think I'm correct, but don't want to get penalised if I'm wrong.

Hi Thomas Holmes,

You can disregard the paper bill.
These can be generated in advance of when they go out.
The online position will be the most up to date.

Thank you.
