I will exceed the tax allowance for savings in the year 24/25 and was looking into Self Assessment online to see what was involved. It would seem I accidently applied for Self Assessment as I have just received the paperwork giving me a UTR which would not be too much of a problem but it is asking for me to do a return for the years 23/24. I have no need to do that, so why is it back dating for the last year. How do I cancel this demand.

Hi cmingra13 Ingram,
It could be that, when you registered, you gave a start date that fell within the 23/24 tax year.
If you do not need to file a 23/24 return, contact us so that we can cancel your need to file this return.
You can do this here:
Self Assessment tax returns
Or by contacting us by webchat or phone here:
Self Assessment: general enquiries
Thank you.
