I left the UK in March 2023, and have been residing in Malaysia since then (and continue to do so). And even though already let HMRC know I've changed my residence status, I can see they still fined me £100 for not submitting a self-assessment for 23-24 (and currently, their online process won't let me change my resident status for outside the UK). I've earned almost all my income abroad (minus 2 small jobs from UK companies for my freelance service, which total under £1000 income). So I owe no UK tax. I actually tried to submit a assessment months ago to showcase all that, but on page 1 of the online self-assessment, they won't let me select a taxpayer residency status OTHER THAN English and Northen Irish/Scottish/Welsh. Shall I go ahead and returns with that wrong residency? I don't want there to be any confusion at all. I have not visited the UK since I have left too. Would so appreciate any guidance on this - thank you!

Hi,
As you are not a UK resident, you cannot file online with HMRC software.
Please refer to the following guidance to ascertain if a return is still required
Who must send a tax return
Thank you

Yes, annoying isn´t it that you can't file an SA return using the online system when you are non-resident. For about £25, you can get a copy of TaxCalc which will allow you to file online. Make sure you buy the 2023/24 version. You'll need to supply it with your online credentials and complete the Residence, remittance basis etc section.
