I am a new landlord registering for self assessment for the first time to declare income in the 23-24 tax year. I thought I could register anytime but can see I should have registered by 5th October deadline. All my submissions will be online, should I just go ahead and register online or do I need to ring HMRC? Will I be penalised for registering late, even if I submit my return before 31/1/25? Thank you.

Hi,
You will still register online. As you are registering after the 5 October, when the notice to file the Self Assessment is issued, you will have 3 months and a week to file the tax return before any late filing penalties are charged, but, the original payment date for any balance due will remain the same, 31 January 2025.
Thank you.
