Hi I have been back and forth between HRMC and SLC twice now. Really looking to get the following resolved. HMRC claims there's a dept within SLC which needs to action this. SLC claims its up to HMRC. I have just finished my self-assessment for tax year 22-23. During that tax year; the payments taken by my employers did not sum up to the minimum required for my Plan 1 and Postgrad. As a result my self-assessment claims I am due to repay £4k in additional payments towards my student loan. The issue is I have since finished paying off my student loans in the following (current) tax year 23-24. This means this payment that I am being requested for by HMRC should not apply. The loan is complete/closed. SLC have confirmed with me the account is closed. The question is; how do I stop HMRC asking for the payment as part of the self-assessment? I have seen a reply here suggesting you should just say I did not contribute to a student loan for that tax-year. This seems controversial as I would be intentionally lying on my self-assessment. This must come up every single tax season, so what's the answer and which team can actually solve it? Thanks

Hi

Change your answer to 'no' so that no additional charges for the student loan are added.

Thank you
