I filed my self-assessment for 2022/23 about a month ago. The total tax due was around £20K, and the amount due in Jan 2024 was around £30K including payments on account. I'm self-employed, so that was about what I expected. I wasn't sure what the final bill would be because that gross £30K gets reduced by the previous payments on account (right?). Right now, the "current position" page on HMRC Services just says "you have nothing to pay". I can't tell if that's the final summary, or if it's going to update at some point and tell me I need to pay £10K in January (or more). I want to be confident now about what my real tax bill will be so I can plan for it. Is there a page anywhere on HMRC that details how your payments have been allocated to each year's tax, including payments on account, and what the exact current balance is? (Surely not exactly £0) I can see bits and pieces by digging into the tax year overviews, but not how it all fits together. A year or two ago I overpaid (I wasn't sure if my January payment had gone through, so I ended up paying it twice). I thought that would have all resolved by now (e.g. I didn't have to pay anything mid-year, and that seemed fine) but maybe not. Possibly I'm still in the black after that and really have nothing to pay right now? But I'm not confident of that and I don't want a surprise bill. Any advice appreciated!

Hi Alex Glasgow,
The payments on account are not shown on the calculation.
You will be credited with the payments on account on your statement of account which will update the balance due for 31 January.
If you check your current statement it should show any payments becoming due 31 January.
If you cannot find this online if you contact HMRC we can advise of payments becoming due.

Thank you.
