I am on an approved medical training scheme with a national training number in radiology. As part of my training and to become a consultant I am obliged to pass the Royal College of Radiology exams including FRCR Part 2B There are a number of non-mandatory training courses to pass this mandatory exam - can I claim tax relief on these courses if I do not recieve a refund from my employer

Hi el613,
To review if the exam fee is less than £2500 you will need to complete a claim form P87 Claim tax relief for your job expenses.
If above £2500 you will need to register and complete a Self Assessment Register for Self Assessment if you are not self-employed.
Thank you.

Thank you. My query is not related to the exam fee, but courses for the exam. Can I claim back the cost for these courses as they are technically not mandatory but incredibly helpful towards passing the exam

Hi,
You may be able to claim tax relief on these courses, if they enhance your ability to work in your current employment - you can find more advice on what kind of courses will qualify here Check if the cost of training could be an allowable business expense .
If you would like advice on specific courses, contact us by webchat or phone via Self Assessment: general enquiries
Thank you.
