Hi, wondering if anyone can shed some light on a slight issue I have. I changed jobs in July 2022, my old job was just under 50k, new job is over 60k, so it means I need to repay child benefit (we stopped claiming once we realised, the total amount claimed for that tax year was £1,087, which is what I calculated and also what the HMRC self assessment says) - so far so good, but when completing the self assessment, it wants £1,229.72 in total. (£142.72 more than I actually owe for HICBIC) My PAYE is correct and up to date (and looking at my previous years, it says "Based on the information that HMRC have, xx was the right amount of Income Tax for you to pay." - why has the system now decided I owe some more tax? All the allowances and calculations are already done for that tax year, I don't understand why it's not a case of simply repaying the £1,087 - why would my tax change because of this? Do I just have to suck it up, or is there anything I can do? (Submit and follow it up after?) Thanks in advance.

Hi

The additional £142.72 may be due for something beyond HICBC - a deduction not included in your previous codes, for example, or a shortfall in tax from earlier in the year.
To allow us to confirm the reason for this addition, please contact us by phone or webchat via Income Tax: general enquiries

Thank you
