I have worked as an entertainer between 2010-2014, and I didn't declare myself as selfe mpolyed as I was told by the girls who woirked with me that I didn't have to, as if we deduct make up and clothes from what we earn, the amount left is not taxable. In about 2017, I had a home visit from HMRC , they said I owe 55,000£ in penalties for not filling tax return. At that time I worked in warehouse, earning £250 a week, I offered 50£ a week, but they didn't accept and said they will procedure with bankruptcy. I never heard anything back until March 2024, when HMRC turned up at my door again with the same bill of £55,000. I agreed to give them £300 a month but I will be paying this until I die. I didn't know I could ask for a review, or anything. At the time I was working I was so young, 22 and my English was very poor plus I didn't know the law, that I had to register as self employed. Is there any chance to reduce this penalty ?
