OK, a little background first. I plan on setting up a new business as sole trader, but need to have confirmation that I trade under a business name to be able to get the Merchant Account I need for online payments. When I register as Sole Trader using a business name, is the business name shown on the HMRC confirmation letter sent once I register? I am aware that HRC does not actually register a formal business name for me. I mean along the lines of "[personal name] trading as [business name]" as opposed to a registered Ltd Company.

Hi Gerry More,
The business name you would declare when registering for a Self Assessment Tax return, is used mainly to identify a different trade, where you have more than one self- employment trade and is for Self Assessment purposes only.
It is not registered in any way and as the letter advising you of your 10 digit UTR number is standardised, it will not show your business name, as the UTR number covers all sources of world-wide income, not just self- employment.
Expenditure  incurred on advertising to establish a market share for a new product or brand may be capital.
An asset of this type is normally developed from scratch in-house although it may occasionally be built up from the acquisition of a struggling brand name or the rights in an invention.
BIM35640 - Capital/revenue divide: intangible assets: expenditure developing a brand name
Thank you.

Can you please help clarify - I am filing SA for the first time. I have been hired by different organisations for their work. |What does the following mean in Self Assessment ? Do I have to give their company name when answering the following question. - Please provide us with the name of your business(es): How many self-employed businesses did you have?

Another question for BUSINESS NAME for Self Assessment - I was hired by an individual for 1 job. Are the following questions related to the person who hired me or is it about my business address? - Has your business name, description, address or postcode changed in the last 12 months? Did your business cease trading after 5 April 2022 but before 6 April 2023?

Hi,

You will only have one self employed business and it is normally under your own name. If you have called your self employment something else, refer to that.

Thank you.

Hi Minxy,
If you are going to be a sole trader then you will need to register for Self Assessment if your gross income will be greater that £1000.
If you will be a director of a limited company then this will not be self employment and is not Self Assessment criteria.
You can check if you meet the criteria to register for Self Assessment here:
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
Thank you.
