Hi team, We have received the UTR letter (dated October 2023) in the mid Nov 2023 but we are unable to receive the activation code until now. In fact, we have requested the activation code for the UTR once again in mid of Jan 2024 already. Please advise if the situation is normal for a overseas taxpayer in Hong Kong? We really have deep concern of the penalty of the late payment of the taxation as this is our first experience in handling taxation matters for the UK government. We have diligently submitted all the relevant forms for taxation and self-assessment by post already in November 2023. We are fully prepared to promptly fulfill our tax obligations once we receive the notice of taxation payment. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to receiving your advice soon.

Hi

As the activation code is being sent to you in Hong Kong it will take longer to arrive.
If you do not receive in time to file by the due date and a late filing penalty is charged, then, you can appeal the penalty once the notice is received
Check when to appeal a Self Assessment penalty for late filing or late payment

Thank you

Could I need the activation code of UTR to file my self tax assessment?

Hi,

To register for Self Assessment and receive your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), complete either the CWF1 or SA1 forms, depending on your circumstances.
You can find out more here:

Check how to register for Self Assessment

Once you've received your UTR, create a Government Gateway account and enrol on there to file your Self Assessment returns online.
You can find more advice on how to do that here:

Thank you.
