I was a director of a business that closed (via administration) in February 2024. I lost £10k that I had invested as shares; I never took any bonus or dividend from the business. I have never been a director or investor in any other business before or after this. I am back in work as an employee. Am I able to offset the lost £10k against PAYE tax that I have been paying?

Hi ,

You would have to submit a claim for losses.

Please have a look at the guidance at :

Negligible value claims and agreements  .

Thank you .

Not HMRC...you cannot usually offset capital losses bar some very specific circumstances...this should help decide if you are eligible...https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/negligible-value-claims-and-income-tax-losses-on-disposals-of-shares-you-have-subscribed-for-in-qualifying-trading-companies-hs286-self-assessment-he/hs286-negligible-value-claims-and-income-tax-losses-on-disposals-of-shares-you-have-subscribed-for-in-qualifying-trading-companies-2021
