Hi, my husband has received a letter regarding a check on whether we need to pay the HICBC for 22/23, but we don't have any children or have any with anyone else and we have never had anyone's living with us so this has appeared out of the blue. There was no entry on his return from last year regarding child benefit payments as we have never claimed any given we have no children. The letter just indicates we need to pay the charge, but I can't find anything on line about if this letter has been sent in error and what to do. Any help, gratefully received.

I had the same letter. I followed the steps on the back of the letter and it confirmed there's no child benefit claim on my account so I'm assuming there's nothing else I need to do. Seems like a waste of paper, time and money to have sent me the letter when there's no child benefit claim, potentially sensitive for some people too.

Hi

If no child benefit was received then the higher income child benefit charge would not apply.
I would advise in this case for your husband to contact HMRC to check why the letter has been issued Self Assessment: general enquiries

Thank you
