I have recently opted not to receive child benefit after moving in with my partner who earns over the allowance. My ex has recently indicated they would like to claim the child benefit instead, can he do this and if so will that mean my partner will still have to pay the tax on the child benefit? The claim is still in my name I have just opted not to receive, will I be infirmed if he tries to claim it?

My current salary is £57k but I have pension contributions and other things that are taxable benefits. I also have a company car which amounts on my payslip to just under £1000 per month, so adds nearly £12k onto my salary even though I don’t see a penny of it and pay 40% tax on it. Does this have to be included in the adjusted net income amount?

Hi,
Adjusted net income is the total taxable income, before any personal allowances and less certain tax reliefs.
Guidance on how to calculate this can be found here:
Personal Allowances: adjusted net income
Thank you

this charge is a bolt out of the blue. i earn over the threshold my partner does not. she has a child that lives with us and claims child benefit. The father of her child pays no maintenance as he claims to be unemployed but works as a builder !!.and does very nicely. i pay £700 pm for my 2 children from a previous relationship. Our finances are separate. i don't understand why i should pay back someone else child benefit. And the letter for the charge turns up 6 months into the next tax year and tells you it can be backdated for years. Doesnt seem a very fair system
