Hi, I have had a VAT number stolen someone and used to set up a Government Gateway account, and file a return with a repayment on it. I have called a few different numbers at HMRC and have always spoken to people who have given the impression the problem is under control, I have been told it has even been marked as fraud and is resolved and that I will get access to set up a correct government gateway, but I am still receiving emails that the account is being used and they are changing the business details etc. It seems crazy that no one is able to assist with this - since I assume it is someone actively stealing money from HMRC. Also I need to pay VAT , so pretty bad system to allow stealing but not care about correcting it so someone can actually pay VAT that should be due. Can anyone suggest who I might speak to? At a loss as spent hours and hours on this now and still no resolution!

Hi,
Apologies that this has happened and that as of yet this has not been resolved.
If a marker has been put on the account then the fraud team are involved and they will stop any repayments going out to the fraudster involved.
Please contact our Helpline again on 0300 200 3700 so that we can bring this issue to a close and allow you to set up your Business Tax Account thus allowing you to submit your VAT returns.
Thank you.
