I have previously ( around 2017) claimed tax relief for professional expenses related to my medical training (governing bodies, registration fees and exams/exam courses). I did this via a printed letter and received a check in the mail and my tax code was changed. I tried to do this again online on the HMRC website but it only gives me the option to input recurrent expenses like registration fees and medical defense union and it seems the end result is just the adjustment of tax code rather than a check. However in the last couple of years I have sat multiple exams and paid for exam courses which I would like to claim VAT for How do I go about claiming back for those? Am I still able to write it all out and send a letter to an HMRC PO box? Note that I will not be claiming more than 2500 pounds Many thanks

Hi ojkojk,
You can normally only claim VAT back from HMRC if you are in business and VAT registered.
So I don't know of any way that you could recover VAT incurred if you are not VAT registered.
Thank you.
