Due to the circumstances you explained, since October 1 2022 those who meet certain exemption criteria are eligible to claim for a 1 bedroom home, the amount is set by your local authority under their LHA rates for this financial year. The fact you live in a 2 bedroom with a non-dependent means you are still only entitled to claim for 1 bedroom, and your housemate can do the same (dependent on their age and circumstances). Your best bet is to figure out how much half of the rent is and pay and equal share from your Housing Element. For more specific advice speak to your work coach at your local Jobcentre office or post a note on your journal for your case manager to review. You can do this at gov.uk/universal-credit.
