  • Reclaiming VAT on Importing my own personal belongings from abroad

Hi I have a question on importing my own personal belongings. My parents tried sending me a box of my own belongings from their house in Poland via a courier service. I received an email from the courier saying there was a very large VAT on the import which they had paid and were now recharging to me (with a disbursement fee) before they would deliver to me. 1) Is there an exception for moving my own belongings? Most of what’s in the box I have a receipt for from when I bought it back in 2019 in Poland. Having paid VAT with that purchase. The total value is definitely less than £1000 2) if so do I need to repay the courier service now and then reclaim the amount from HMRC? (C285?). What do I need aside from my receipt from original purchase?
