RE: CGT - shares
Hi there Thanks for this. Can I just double check pls, that I can change and amend this in my 23/24 self assessment, CGT section 58 - losses brought forward and used in the year, from the Debenhams closure in May 2021? Many thanks. -
RE: CGT - dates of calculation
Thanks, so much. Could I ask a final question pls. On the CGT calc, the 18% is calculated off £22,270, what is this number? I thought it was the basic rate of tax, but isn’t this up to £37,700 and even if I deduct PA, it’s £25,130? Many Thanks -
CGT - shares
Hi Can you help pls? I bought some Debenhams shares on the stock market in June 2018, in May 2021 Debenhams went into administration and I lost my money, I have no connections to the company. I have completed my 23/24 self assessment and had already paid CGT on another investment in this ax year, could I have declared the Debenhams loss on my self assessment and if not, can I? Is there anywhere I can still declare? Many thanks for your help. -
RE: CGT - dates of calculation
Hi Thanks for this. Can you pls advise if I can still rebase the property value from April 2015, post budget as a non UK resident? I can’t seem to find this option on HMRC and I had draft documents saved down from pre 30/10 which are no longer there. Regards -
CGT - dates of calculation
Hi there Can you help pls? I am selling a property that is my only family home. I have owned for 13 years and lived in the house for 10 with my family. Due to working commitments, we all moved out in year 11 and during that a year a friend house sitted for us, no rent was paid, but she did pay for the council tax and utilities, so I made no gain and the arrangement was flexible so we could be back in should we need to. Year 12/13 , work was more guaranteed, so I rented out privately and received rent and paid tax through self assessment. I am aware that I need to pay CTG, but should this be for the 2 years I gained or 3 including the 1 year I didn’t gain? Thanks v much. -

Rental income
Hi Can you help pls? I rent a property for £2000 per month, pay agency fees @10%, £200 and receive £1800 into my account. I’m clear that I can offset the £200 cost, but do I input £1800 or £2000 as the rent received? Thanks v much !! -
CTG section on Self Assessment forms
Hi I sold a rental property that was previously a family home for 10 years, completed and paid CGT accordingly in July 2023. Now I am completing my 22/23 self assessment and it’s asking about CGT. Do I need to complete this section if I have already submitted and paid CTG? If I do need to complete, what information do need to input and what is the significants and/or potential impact on my tax situation for 22/23? Thanks v much!! -
CGT - 2015 rebase Q
Hi Could you help pls, I have 3 questions that I am struggling with. I am a non resident British passport holder and moved to the UAE in 2021 for employment. I am selling a property that I have owed for 22 years (purchased 2001), a family home for 13 years which I lived in and then subsequently rented for 9 years (for the 9 years, this was not our main residence). I've had the property professionally revalued as of April 2015 to use the rebasing method to calculate CGT owed. Q1 - can I use this method of calculation if I was still a UK resident in 2015 (I only became a non resident in 2021)? Q2 - there is a question regarding my UK personal allowance (and UK income) and whilst I am not employed in the UK, I have rental income from this property and I therefore submit a self assessment tax return. Do I assume GBR 12,570 personal allowance to this question? Q3 - when I calculate through on the HMRC website, rebasing is the lowest amount to pay (v straight line and the gain over the full ownership period). I wanted to double check I can selected the lowest amount, in this case the rebasing calculation? Many thanks in advance!!
