  • Foreign tax refund

Dear HMRC, I lived overseas many years before moving to the UK. I received a foreign tax refund from an overseas government for tax I paid them when I lived overseas. I did not claim foreign tax credit in the UK and I applied for split year treatment in the year I arrived in the UK. Do I have to report this refund to HMRC? The refund arrived in the 2nd tax year since my move to the UK. If so, do I report in SA100 self assessment? Thanks.
  • Qualifying Relocation Expense - Hotel Cost

Dear HMRC, I moved from one UK city to another UK city to start work at my current employer. My employer reimbursed me the hotel cost I paid for in the new city while I looked for a flat to rent. Is the cost of hotel a qualifying relocation expense? If so and if my employer reimbursed me less than 8000 pounds, then I do not have to report this reimbursement to HMRC and self assessment SA100? Thanks and regards, Alice

  • Gift of Cash and Inheritance Tax

Dear HMRC, My sisters would like to give me gift of cash to buy a flat in England. I live in England with BNO (British National Overseas) visa but my sisters live overseas and are not UK citizens. Will I have to pay tax for this gift of cash I received from my sisters? And if my sister(s) dies, will I have to pay any inheritance tax or other type of tax in the UK? Thanks and regards, Alice
