Reporting Capital Gains Tax When Below the Annual Exempt Amount
Hello, I have sold shares that resulted in a gain, but the amount is less than the annual exempt amount of £3,000. I am not currently registered for Self Assessment. Do I need to report this to HMRC? If so, what is the deadline for doing so? Additionally, if the shares were sold in a foreign currency (e.g., US dollars), can I use an online website for the currency conversion, or is there a specific official source that I must use for these calculations? Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, -
RE: When Selling Shares which date to use for Self Assesment Tax Year
Apologies, but does the completion date mean the trade date (when the stock shares were actually sold by the broker "transaction date") or the settlement date (when the broker transferred the money to the customer's account)? I assume it's the trade date when the shares were already sold. Is that correct? Thank you for your guidance! -
Clarification on Capital Gains Tax (Stock Shares): Trade Date vs. Settlement Date
Hello, I sold shares in May 2024 while living in a tax-free country. The settlement date was a few days later, also in May 2024. I moved to the UK after the trade date but before the settlement date. For UK CGT purposes, should I consider the trade date or the settlement date as the relevant date for reporting the gain? Thank you for your guidance! -

RE: Moving stocks from foreign broker to UK
Hello, I'm having a similar situation as I move my stock to the UK. I vested this stock 2-3 years ago when I wasn't a UK resident. If I am going to be selling that stock in the future while I am a UK resident, will the share base value for my calculation of the capital gain tax be the stock price when I got awarded the stocks from my company, the vesting dates (when they are transferred to my custody), or when I became a UK resident? I got an advice that the base value is going to be the value of the shares when I become a UK resident. Many thanks
