RE: Defer offsetting of capital gains loss against gain
Thank you, and I have already declared the losses. My question is about whether I have to use them at the first opportunity or not? I have a capital gain which will be eligible for BADR and I would rather not use the losses to reduce this gain, but instead wait until the next tax year when some other gains will be taxed at a higher rate than BADR. -
RE: Rules about when to use losses made in previous years
Thank you very much. Very helpful. -
Defer offsetting of capital gains loss against gain
I have some capital losses from previous years. I now have a gain, but would like to pay the tax on that gain rather than use my losses to offset some of it. Can I do this, or do I have to use up accrued losses as soon as I make a gain? -
Rules about when to use losses made in previous years
My question is about previous years’ capital losses and when they can be offset against gains. I understand about using in-year losses against gains, but are there any rules about when you can use previous losses? In my situation, I have a capital gain which qualifies for BADR, so will be taxed at 10%. I’d like to hold onto losses from a previous year and use these to offset some capital gains in the future which will be subject to considerably higher rates of tax than 10%. Can I do this, or do I have to use them at the first opportunity? Any help appreciated.
