  • RE: Refund of Voluntary NI contribution after mistakenly paying Class 3 instead of 2

I have a similar situation. I was working overseas from 2005 until 2023 when I returned to the UK. I then called HMRC last year to explain my situation and was told to pay Class 3 contributions for the missing years overseas. I’ve done that and my NI record shows I am up to date and expected to receive the full State Pension of approximately £11500 per annum. However, I believe that I should have been advised to pay Class 2 contributions not Class 3 as I worked in Singapore for 18 years until I returned in 2023. Prior to that, I lived and worked in the UK from 1984 to 2005. My questions: 1. I believe I overpaid and was told to complete the CF83 form online. Is that correct? 2. If I only have to pay the Class 2 amounts (which are much lower than Class 3 I’ve already paid), will this mean my final State Pension is lower due to lower Class 2 contributions? Many thanks
