Maternity Allowance - Self Emplyed + Unpaid CIC Director
Hello I have been working and registered as self employed since April 2024 and I am expecting a baby in February 2025. I was employed full time until March 2024. I am also an unpaid director of a CIC (community interest company). As an unpaid CIC director, do I need to complete an SMP1 form for myself with the Maternity Allowance Claim Form? Many thanks -
Self Employed contractor considering co-founder status
Hello, I recently became self employed (this month) and one of the three companies I plan to contract with has asked if I would like to become a co-founder. The company is a small start-up based in the US that is in the process of becoming registered (tbc whether they will be US or UK registered, but likely US). The idea is that I would be treated as a contractor and paid a day rate for any days that I work for the company, and I would also receive a small amount of equity in the business as cofounder (around 5%). I will continue to do contract work with other organisations, and would be contracting on an ad hoc basis for 8-10 days a month for the start-up in question - dependent on whether they have sufficient funds to procure my services. I have a few questions that can hopefully help me in making the decision as to whether to accept the cofounder role: a) As a co-founder of a US-based start-up, would I be classed as a director of that company for tax purposes? b) As a co-founder/director, can I still class income from the company I am a cofounder of, as self-employed/contracting income? c) If not, how would this need to be categorised, and what are the tax implications for the other contracts I deliver? d) If the start-up decides to register the business in the UK, would this change the answers to questions a to c?
