It seems to be impossible to create a CGT account in order to declare and pay CGT in respect of a UK property sale - the only available option refers to trusts and estates. Following all possible links and routes to do this, including going through the (helpful) online calculation, leads to the same (useless) place from which it is impossible to create the required account. The alternative of filling in an online form, printing it out, then posting it is not acceptable, not least because much of the information required is not explained clearly (and given the rapidly approaching payment deadline, it is not an entirely attractive option). A clear and unambiguous guide to how this is supposed to be done, with suitable links and instructions, would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks - having managed to access the online chat yesterday, I have sorted out the issue, and am going to post the solution here in case anyone else is having difficulties with the 'trusts or estates' option when trying to create a new CGT account. The guidance implies that if you are already registered for self assessment, you can start there. However - and apparently THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM! - **IF** you have been self-employed at any point, it will be assumed that your property sale relates to a trust or estate. I struggle to see why, but this is how it is. It's a shame that, being a known problem, this is not made clear in the general guidance. Anyway, to get around it, you just need to set up a completely new gateway account, at which point it all becomes quite straightforward. Doesn't matter that name, address and other information is all identical to the existing gateway account, it will all work fine. The HMRC guy I spoke to (typed with?) online identified the problem immediately, so it's a little disappointing that the mention of 'trusts and estates' in the first sentence of the OP didn't have the same effect

Thanks for posting this. I have had the exact same problem. Your solution, to create a new gateway account worked a treat. Thank-you. This is very obviously a bug in the system. I understand that it can take time to get these things fixed, but as you suggest, it should be pretty straightforward to update the text to say that you cannot use your existing Government Gateway account and must create a new one, if that is what is required.

@LizL Thank you for posting a solution. I'm having exactly the problem. I'm self employed and have a property sale which does not belong to a trust or estate. I'll have another try at submitting the info again.
