I recently bought an item on Ebay from the EU (Czech Republic) for £130.
Ebay added £26 as VAT making the item £156.
DHL are now holding the item stating VAT and duties need to be paid on the item.
These were then calculated from the £156. So the item now totals £201.
Is this correct?
The seller has stated it wasn't them that collected the vat but eBay. And now DHL of course.
Any advice?
Thanks.

For items below £130 then it is correct that eBay as the platform should add UK vat. No additional charges should be made on arrival. It maybe that the seller who sent the package didn’t make this clear to DHL such as identification of the eBay UK VAT number or not correctly stating the VAT exclusive price. If DGL are basing calculations on £156 this looks to be what’s happened. If the purchase wasn’t in GBP then then the current customs exchange rate may take the goods over £130. Firstly go back to DHL with evidence of prior UK VAT payment . Failing that you can reject the package or pay what they ask and claim a refund from customs.

Hi Colin Burt
Anything posted or couriered to you from another country goes through customs to check it is not banned or restricted and you pay the right tax and ‘duty’ on it.
This includes anything new or used that you:
• buy online
• buy abroad and send back to the UK
• receive as a gift
The parcel or courier company (for example, Royal Mail or Parcelforce) is responsible for taking goods through UK customs.
Please see the guidance at:
Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad: Tax and duty
Thank you.
