I am from overseas and received a penalty notice from HMRC for failure to file the tax return. I sent the return subsequently by registered mail but just received another penalty notice. Any direct email to contact the responsible HMRC staff so that I can attach the proof? I cannot find any email in the website. Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi,

You cannot contact HMRC by email.

You will either need to telephone +441355359022 or write to HM Revenue and Customs
                                                                                                   BX9 1AS.

You can appeal penalties, provided we have received your tax return.

Guidance can be found at :

Self Assessment: appeal against penalties for late filing and late payment .

Thank you.

Hi HMRC, I have an issue we are currently facing, and below are some further details: The problem we are encountering revolves around logging into the HRMC system to access the pension scheme for our staff. Unfortunately, we seem to have forgotten the password. Currently, we are not able to use company PIC’s passport to rest the password. Hence, I was wondering if there are any alternative methods available for us to reset the password? Additionally, we have followed the instructions “Online Service Helpdesk” -> “Get help with problems signing in” -> “reset your password” -> key in the email requested. Regrettably, we are unable to receive the Authenticator code and encountered the following error message: “Call an HMRC helpline You cannot recover your sign in details online until you have set up a device to receive access codes. You will be able to do this the next time you sign in.” Could you please assist us in resolving this issue promptly? We are in urgent need of accessing the HRMC system to proceed with the pension scheme. Our goal is to have this resolved before the end of the month. If necessary, we can arrange a call to discuss this matter further. I am also okay if you contact me by email. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Your quick response is highly appreciated! Thanks and regards,

Dear HMRC I have left the UK and asked my friend on behalf of me to receive the personal tax refund. You have sent a message that you will send a cheque to my friend within 14 days. However she didn’t receive more than a month. I tried to call you, no one answered. Or can you send the money to my bank account instead of by posting the cheque. Thanks so much!

I am suffering emotional and medical difficulties and need to contact a real person at HMRC. The phone agents tell you they will help and people will make contact but then don't follow up. I'm on hold for more than an hour for each time just to end up in the same predicament. Interest on my account is supposed to be on hold due to hardship and an operative is supposed to be sending out documents that have never materialised. All I keep getting is more and more charges. Why is it so difficult to sort issues? Do I need to go through a solicitor and make a formal complaint? Is there anyone in HMRC that deals with cases that don't fit a standard profile?

Dear Sir/Ma'am, I was employed by the UK universities for past 10 years, as a scientist. However, I was working mostly overseas. Currently, I am based within the EU but outside the UK. I have been trying to login to my HMRC account for a while. However, I am unable to login as I do not have access to multiple documents requested for validation as I worked mostly overseas. I see two ways to confirm my identity. First using a mobile app and second by entering my details online. When I select the mobile app option, it requests a passport with a biometric chip which I do not have. If I select the "No" option, it asks for BRP, BRC or FWP. None is valid as I was working overseas. When I select the other option, it asks for a UK photo card driving license which I do not have either as mentioned I lived mostly overseas. When I select "No", It takes me back to the identity confirmation page. If I select Enter your details online, It asks for -UK photocard driving licence (including provisional licences) You need a driving licence issued by the DVA or the DVLA - UK passport You need a valid UK passport - Credit reference questions For example, the year you took out a credit card or phone contract I do not have the above details as I am not a UK citizen. But I do hold a UK bank account that is active and in regular use. Also, I have information on which year I received my credit card from the UK bank. I called multiple times to HMRC, however, I was unable to connect even after 40 minutes keeping me on hold. I kindly request the HMRC to assist me with accessing my account as I need the documents to submit at the bank here. Many thanks.

Dear Sir/Ma'am, I tried to get help on "Technical support with HMRC online services: chat". I got following reply. ``` If you do not have the information to answer the questions then we will not be able to verify your identity. This means that you cannot pass identity verification and you will need to try again and choose a different way to verify. A small number of people cannot currently verify their identity online. HMRC is looking at additional data sources it could use to allow more people to do this, including those without a UK passport. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If you can't verify online, you can contact HMRC (opens in a new tab) and ask for support. They cannot help you with verifying your identity, but they can help you with specific queries about your Tax or Self Assessment. ``` The response states that calling me won't be able to assist me in logging into my account. Is it worthwhile for me to visit the HMRC office in the United Kingdom? Kind regards,

Hi vanu,
If you do not have the documents needed to verify your indentity then you will not be able to register online to submit your Self Assessment and a paper tax return would be needed.
You cannot visit an HMRC office to discuss.
You would need to contact us:

Dear Sir/Ma'am, How should I contact you? I have tried all means. You don't have email. My calls were on hold for over 40 minutes with no communication. I hope you understand that international calls are expensive. Your app requires a verification document, which I don't have (see my first message). These documents were not requested when I created my account. The link you provided tells me to do the same thing I've done in the past. Please suggest what options are viable for non-British people working abroad. Kind regards

Hi, I can't remember my national insurance number and I need to obtain it now, but I haven't lived in the UK since 1999. In order to apply for my national insurance number online or on the HMRC App, I must have a UK post code. Obviously, seeing as I don't live in the UK anymore, I don't have a UK post code. If you can contact me by email I can give you all necessary details. I have paid a provider online to get this information, but I haven't heard anything back yet and reviews are not positive. Please contact me and help me to get this information. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards

Hello Team, I have received a notification from HMRC regarding too little tax paid for the year 2022-23. However, rechecking the calculation with my tax advisor we have identified the amount mentioned of previous employer in HMRC portal is different then the amount mentioned in my P45 and P60 form. I called HMRC and the advisor on the call asked me to send a post with the Letter to HMRC explaining the discrepancy and also sharing P45 forms. Can you help me with the correct HMRC address to send this post, as the one I sent to BX9 1AS isn't yet delivered as per Royal Mail tracking which I sent on 13th Feb which made me wonder if this is the right address or do I need to send to some other alternate one ?

The correct address is HMRC, Self Assessment & PAYE, BX9 1AS UK.

Hi, HMRC Admin, I received the request on 10th April 2024 to submit the declaration for my young child with a full-time education. The post code to send the form is BX9 1GT which is not in the Royal Mail database. Although I sent it through Royal Mail using the same postcode it shows in transit. I submitted the declaration online on 12th Feb 2024 but it still shows in progress. Kindly advise how to submit the form by email.
