Hi
To apply to pay for years while living abroad, the customer should read our NI38 leaflet from gov.uk Social Security abroad: NI38 which gives all of the information about which Class of national insurance would be payable.
There is then for CF83 on the same link which the customer should complete and send in to our overseas section stating which class of NI they want to pay and for which years – the international team will then process the form and reply giving payment options for the customer.
Thank you.

Can you please confirm what dates you are currently working on for the application of class 2 voluntary national contributions received from Spain. I have checked websiste "check when expect a reply" but not sure what option to choose. Thanks Sharon

Hi yes, I was self employed in spain from the start of 2008 to 2018, so my understanding is that I could be eligible for class 2 during the period of employment between 2008 - 2016, as I mentioned earlier, I still reside in spain to this day, however am currently working in the UK sporadically, and have paid full NI for the last 2 years

Hi Sharon2,
On the HMRC Check when you can expect a reply from HMRC CF83 applications from an EU country please selected this route:
•    Agent Y/N
•    National Insurance
•    EU application (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway & Switzerland) to pay National Insurance whilst abroad.
•    then the date you have sent the letter into us for the expected reply date
We are currently working cases received on 13/02/2023 as of 15/12/2023 but please be advised this date is an estimate and may change.
Thank you.

Hi notre1dame,
Please look at the booklet NI38 – Application to pay voluntary National Insurance abroad, the application form on the link is CF83.
You will need to detail the information about your time abroad including the periods of self-employment and the nature of the work on a supporting document.
Social Security abroad: NI38
If you wish to discuss your eligibility to be able to pay voluntary National Insurance abroad, please call the international caseworker helpline or use the Personal tax account to speak to an advisor via webchat services.
National Insurance: non-UK residents
Thank you.

Hi I originally completed the form N138 in March 2023, however I completed the form incorrectly as I understood that I could only pay national insurance voluntary contributions from 2006 to 2016 and therefore only provided employment during this time. (Applied for Class 2 ) The (March form) has now been completed and I would like to apply for the periods after this date and ask for permission to pay future periods Class 2 as I am a Teacher working in Spain Can you please clarify if the The correct procedure would be complete a new from stating the periods i.e. (2016 to present) I would like to apply and provide employment details for these new dates?

Hi Sharon2,
If you previously asked about paying voluntary National Insurance contributions for the 2006-2007 to 2015-2016 tax years then a new CF83 application form would be needed to pay tax years after that.
You could ask to pay by annual payment or by direct debit on the CF83 for future tax years if you’d like to do this.
You may find the CF83 from here:
Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)
Thank you.
